Mary is a reoccurring character throughout much of the franchise, most notably in Kimba the White Lion (Jungle Emperor), and Jungle Emperor Leo (1997 film).

Jungle Emperor (manga)[]

Mary manga)

In the original manga, she was one of Kenichi's childhood friends living in Aden. She and Pierre would often tease Kimba (Leo) while he was living with Kenichi. During her time living in the city, she had an early interest in playing the role of a tribe leader and would dress up as one. However, after going to Africa, she was swept downstream and found by the native tribes. She was set to be killed by the tribesmen, but after using her pen on a Cheetah's fur to create static electricity, it scared the natives enough to make her their queen. She has changed her identity to that of Conga since then. She and her tribe discover Mr. Pompous (Dr. Mustache) one day, and take him hostage after she recognizes him, which makes the animals of Kimba (Leo)'s Jungle to try and rescue him. Kenichi tries to rescue him, but she recognizes him too and keeps him prisoner as well. She sends both the tribe and her enslaved animals to go and kill Kimba, driving much of the Jungle out onto an isolated island until The Mammoth (Great Mother) suddenly arrives and turns the tables on her. She finds soon after that the tribe has turned civilized and the animals had turned on her, leaving her all alone. In the end, she agrees to go back with Kenichi to Japan to live a quiet yet happier life.

Kimba the White Lion (Jungle Emperor)[]

Mary

Her role in the anime is slightly altered compared to the Manga. In "A Human Friend", she grew up with Kenichi with a resentment towards animals, not thinking they're worth being kind to. She was the love of Kenichi, and the two of them ended up crash-landing in the jungle. She and Kenichi end up separated when they attempt to cross a canyon rock bridge, and believes that Kenichi would have died, leaving her all alone. Sometime after she suffered from amnesia, and she was found by Mr. Triggerman and adopted, taking on the name and identity of Conga - a cold-blooded hunting ground keeper who's main goal is to capture and hunt the white lion.

She appears numerous times as the antagonist throughout the series, including "The Hunting Ground", "Catch 'Em If You Can", and "Too Many Elephants", often hunting down animals or capturing them for the hunting grounds. In "Such Sweet Sorrow" is when it follows closer to the Manga: she captures Mr. Pompous in her hunting grounds as hostage, and sends her enslaved animal pets to ambush the jungle and dispense with Kimba. When the animals turned against her, she falls back and hits her head on a rock, regaining her memory and leaving back to civilization with Kenichi.

Jungle Emperor Leo (1997 film)[]

This Mary is a completely different character than in her other appearances, in personality and looks. In the film, she’s an orphaned girl who joins the circus as an acrobat. She meets Lune (Rune) soon after he was sold to the circus, and is the only one treating Lune with respect and friendship out of most of the staff workers, even adding him into her act as a partner. After the circus burns down, she brings Lune away and decides to let him go back home to the Jungle.

Trivia[]

Her 1965, and Manga design were reused for Tima from Metropolis.
